One of the biggest concerns for customers and retailers alike is who is doing the installations. It is only in our recent past that floor layers have been recognised as real tradespeople by the Australian Gov't but still there is NO trades certificate and no real qualifications needed to be self employed or gain contract work from builders & retail stores. Very few were formally trained or actually did an apprenticeship. This has led to a situation where the majority of our workforce is still for the most part, unqualified. Many modern floor coverings presently on the market require specialised skills to ensure a correct, proffessional installation.
This is at times a difficult goal to acheive for any retailer but for us second best is just not good enough. I have over the years terminated the contracts of some very talented layers, some of whom I have known for years because of problems with reliability, consistency or honesty. As an ethical retailer I must walk my talk. My customers are THE most important part of my business!
Some questions to ask your local carpet store:
1) Are your installers subcontractors working as a Pty Ltd company with their own workers compensation policy?
2) Do they have current public liability cover?
3) Are they holders of a current OHS Work Cover "White Card"?
4) Do you have your own induction program?
5) Is your business fully Work Cover compliant in regards to all OH&S requirements?
For us the answers are yes, yes, yes, yes & yes.
At Blue Tongue we have a small team of highly skilled tradesmen led by myself, Stephan. All of us were formally trained with high work ethics, up to date skills and attention to detail. We have been involved in large government DOH contracts for the floorcovering supply & maintenance of over 3000 homes. This meant it was time to get serious about our work policies & practices. A mammoth task but we have done it. Our layers are the best paid, the best trained and the best treated installers in Sydney. A happy tradie is a good tradie !
We expect nothing but the best from them, so you too can expect the best.
Full details of our layers can be found at the bottom of our "Buy at Trade" page.
